TECHNOLOGY PARTNERS

WAI has partnered with leading technology companies and engineering firms that provide innovative solutions for wastewater management. WAI is actively pursuing pilot programs within Hawaiʻi communities to offer alternative solutions to the cesspool issue to benefit homeowners and the environment.

CLOACINA

Located less than five miles from the Pacific Ocean and in the heart of the Central Coast Wine Region, Cloacina faced many of the same challenges experienced on the islands when designing and fabricating wastewater treatment systems for West Coast clients: the most stringent discharge requirements in the United States, severe drought conditions and the need to reclaim treated effluent, corrosion due to ocean proximity and remote and heavily-foliaged project locations. Cloacina’s Design Team spent years conceptualizing, building and testing a line of package wastewater treatment plants specifically for coastal, island and remotely-located clients.

Biomass Controls

WAI is excited to partner with Biomass Controls to introduce its innovative technology to the state. The biogenic refinery uses pyrolysis to transform brown and green waste into pathogen-free, nutrient-rich biochar, which has many uses as a soil amendment and a medium for water and air filtration.

Cinderella

WAI’s Stuart Coleman first met the Cinderella team at the Gates Foundation’s Reinvented Toilet Expo in Beijing, beginning their partnership. Cinderella toilets are a modern alternative to maintenance-intensive composting toilets, and as part of a greywater combination system, they can be a cost-effective and eco-friendly cesspool conversion technology.

Eljen

When combined with a septic tank, the Eljen GSF produces effluent comparable to that of an aerobic treatment unit (ATU). The benefit of the GSF is its passive nature, requiring no electricity or service contract to operate. The GSF system can be used within 1,000 feet of a potable drinking water well in Hawaii.

Fuji Clean

Fuji Clean’s innovative technology, the CEN series, is designed to treat up to 1,000 gallons per day of domestic strength wastewater to NSF/ANSI 245 standards. The ability to remove nitrogen is crucial in environmental protection and its one-tank configuration maximized landscaping flexibility and options for designers and homeowners. The system is highly portable and maneuverable with a weight of fewer than 1000 pounds.

LeaPFrog

Hawaiʻi needs decentralized water and sanitation technology that can scale quickly. By reusing greywater, The EstuaryTM provides a reduction in cesspool loading and a sustainable source of water for irrigation.  Leapfrog’s EstuaryTM and CascadeTM are plant-powered ecological water treatment systems that combine the water cleaning power of wetlands and other natural systems into a compact, modular greywater reuse system. Water from washing machines, sinks, and showers is rerouted into the system where plants and microorganisms absorb and break down contaminants in order to clean the greywater for reuse.

Orenco Systems

Orenco’s PreLOS Wastewater Collection System offers a more innovative, safe and affordable sanitation solution than traditional sewers. The small, flexible sewer lines allow for easier, less disruptive installation. PreLos can be implemented in communities across the Hawaiian Islands at a cost-efficient, durable wastewater alternative to cesspools and septic tanks.

Ridge-to-Reefs

Ridge-to-Reefʻs nature-based Bioreactor Gardens treat septic wastewater using the natural processes of plants, soil, and woodchips to enhance microbial activity. The passive treatment system requires little space, removes nitrogen, uses locally sourced materials and has a low effort and cost for maintenance. The Bioreactor Garden is approved for NSF 245 Equivalency in Hawai'i and has the highest removal rate for nitrogen, 87%. Ridge to Reefs also designs zero discharge systems to minimize any pollution impacting the groundwater, swimming beaches, and coral reefs.
